The number one concern of any automobile owner when it comes time to have their car smog checked is the possibility of large mechanical repair bills.

Let me put your mind at ease.  If you use a test only facility such as inland test only the operators are prohibited by law to do repairs.  This eliminates the concerns that the tests might be manipulated in some way that would cause failure.

The number two concern of auto owners is simply whether or not the car will pass the test.

If your car or truck is a polluter, there will be nothing you can do to influence the results.  If your car is borderline, or you think it is borderline, there are several things you can do before the tests that may help;

1.    Change the oil.  If your car is using oil, try using high mileage oil when you do the oil change.
2.    Change the fuel filter.
3.    Change the air filter.
4.    Replace the gas cap.

As you can see from this list the test is looking for emissions from the tailpipe.  That is usually the mixture of air and fuel burning in your car

Let me quickly show you how we do the test;

1.    Check the emissions of the vehicle in those three areas.
2.    Visual check which consists of checking to make sure all of your smog equipment is there and looked up properly.
3.    Some additional visual tests include such things as timing on some cars, gas caps and a test that started in November of 2008 on cars 1995 vintage and older that is a fuel evaporation test.

Now here are the things that you must look for in choosing a test only smog check facility
1.  Always ask to be serviced by an ASE or equivalent certified technician.
2.  Insure the facility is registered with the Bureau of automotive repair
3.  Always check such places as Google maps and look for testimonials were comments made by their customers.
4.   Be aware of hassles and gimmicks. One of the most common ways of fooling a prospective customer is by quoting a very low price in the ad and then in very small print list all of the additional charges.
