I have used the Zi8 with an external mic and power adapter almost exclusively, and not had hum/noise issues, and I'm using post-processing dynamics compression which would exaggerate any noise. So I would just say that this is not a universal issue. We purchased the unit to create a very short workflow from capture to web and it excels at that, even with the post processing I do, which isn't *necessary* but does put some polish on the finished product. I also highly recommend this unit for simplicity - and the external mic jack is the main selling point for me.
