Hi, I’m Dr. Barry Lycka, host and founder of and Inside Cosmetic Surgery Today, your inside source of cosmetic surgery information you can find nowhere else.

Well today we are going to talk about something I am constantly being asked about ‘how do you treat scars’.

Well I have some sad news for you - some scars we cannot fix - not all scars can be treated.

But the good news is that scars on certain parts of the body, such as the face, we usually can make better and get them to look better.

And even more good news about cosmetic surgery today is that scar treatment and scar correction has been at the forefront of some amazing breakthroughs and we can do wonders with them.

So how can a cosmetic surgeon take care of scars? Well let me share some secrets on that with you….

Number one, we break down the scar into its components and we mentally think about the things that are wrong - we identify what is wrong with each element.

First we look at the colour. Is the scar brown or red?

If it is brown, then we use certain types of lasers on it, and if it is red, then we use other different types of lasers on it.

Secondly, we look to see if a scar is elevated or non-elevated.

If it is elevated, it is probably a hypertrophic scar, or keloidal  scar, and we have some wonderful things we can do with it. We can inject it, we can laser it, plus I’ve learnt how to use Botox to handle these scars as well - this is a big, big advantage!

If a scar is depressed, then we can elevate it, and that is another big thing.

One of the common types of scars we see are scars from acne. When a person has acne they have deep pimples, and when the pimples go away they leave deep scars in their place.  The beautiful thing is that we can use lasers, and fillers, and other things to help them with.

One of my favourite substances for helping with scars is a new substance called PRP - Platelet Rich Plasma - check this link to watch a previous episode on this substance.

PRP is amazing - it is something we take from your blood, we take the serum, we concentrate the platelets in the serum and the platelets have a lot of growth factors in them. By activating the platelets we can make the growth factors ‘take off’ and literally fill in scars. We can make skin look younger, better, and make scars dissapear with it.

And what else can we do with scars ?

Well, we can cut them out and re-sew them, in such a way that they become a ‘z-plasty’ or geographic closure, to make the scars look better, and then we can use a laser to resurface them.

Another thing we can do is something called ‘fractional resurfacing’, or ‘pro-fractional resurfacing’ to make the scars literally ‘pop out and disappear’.

Well, those are some of the ‘tricks’ we use - but the best thing is to set up a plan for YOU.

If you have a scar that you don’t like, then don’t live with it - come and see a qualified physician that knows how to treat it.

Hi I’m Dr. Barry Lycka, host and founder of bringing you the newest and best information on the beauty industry and cosmetic surgery.

Well, today we are going to talk about a new skin cancer detection device.

So this new skin cancer detection device will help you if you have a skin cancer.

It will help diagnose it early and quickly and is more reliable than previous methods to make skin cancer checks.

The machine was invented in Canada and it’s being developed in British Columbia.

The machine is called the “Aura” by Verisante and it’s phenomenal in what it can do.

It works by shining a light on a lesion that we think is a skin cancer, or is showing signs of skin cancer. That causes the lesion to vibrate. The vibration is picked up by the machine and it is analysed by a mass spectrometer.

The mass spectrometer has a memory against which it will test the analysis of the vibration of the lesion, which will help identify what the lesion actually is.

So how does this work in practise?

Now, let’s suppose you shine the light on a basal-cell carcinoma.

It will vibrate in a different way than a squamous-cell carcinoma vibrates.

It will vibrate in a different way than a benign lesion vibrates.

By identifying how a lesion vibrates and comparing the vibration against information in the memory of the machine, this machine can help to detect these skin cancers.

And it does it quickly and efficiently. To screen a lesion takes about a second.

Unfortunately, please don’t expect this method of early skin cancer detection to be covered by health care plans.

It will be too expensive for them to cover this. BUT, for a nominal cost you can get your lesion screened.

I am happy to say that the Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation will be having one of these Aura machines.

And, it will be available in my Edmonton office Dr. Barry Lycka.

Hopefully it will be across Canada very soon and across the United States very soon.

So keep a look-out for this machine - this is the “Aura” by Verisante.

A new machine to help you diagnose your skin cancers.

I’d like to encourage you to Find Us On Facebook at I think you will find it very interesting.

SMILE! Here are 10 Reasons To Smile

Posted by: | Comments (0)

We all know that diet and exercise are integral parts of a healthy lifestyle, but did you know that smiling can improve your health, your stress level, and your attractiveness?  Smiling is a great way to help your body to function better and is just one fun way to live longer!

Here are 10 reasons why putting on a smile can help us mentally, physically and emotionally:

1. Smiling Makes Us Attractive: We are drawn to people who smile. Frowns, scowls and grimaces all push people away - but a smile draws them in.

2. Smiling Changes Our Mood: Next time you are feeling down, try putting on a smile. There’s a good chance your mood will change for the better.

3. Smiling Is Contagious:  When someone is smiling they lighten up the room, change the moods of others, and make things happier. A smiling person brings happiness with them.

4. Smiling Relieves Stress: Stress can really show up in our faces. Smiling helps prevent us from looking tired, worn down, and overwhelmed.

5. Smiling Boosts Your Immune System: Smiling helps the immune system to work better. When you smile, immune function improves possibly because you are more relaxed.

6. Smiling Lowers Your Blood Pressure: When you smile, there is a measurable reduction in your blood pressure. Give it a try if you have a blood pressure monitor at home.

7. Smiling Releases Endorphins, Natural Pain Killers and Serotonin: Studies have shown that smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers, and serotonin. These make us feel good.

8. Smiling Lifts the Face and Makes You Look Younger: The muscles we use to smile lift the face, making a person appear younger.

9. Smiling Helps You Stay Positive: Try this test: Smile. Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. It’s hard. When we smile our body is sending the message that “Life is Good!” Stay away from depression, stress and worry by smiling.

10. My Daughter just got Married! You’ll have to forgive me for this one, but my wife and I are so happy I just had to share my happiness with everyone who is important in my life, and that includes my patients. If you actually wanted to see the wedding video, here’s the link:

Here are some of our patients who have another reason to SMILE…

  • Yvonne G. was one of the lucky winners for 2 Mary Poppins Tickets
  • Irene B - Was the winner of the iPad
  • Debbie G - Won the Digital Photo Frame
  • Also - we gave out 171 $5.00 Tim Horton’s cards to contest entrants (pretty impressive!)

Some Skin Cancer Facts for you to think about ….
Did you know that your skin is the your largest organ of your body?

It covers the internal organs and protects them from injury; serves as a barrier between germs, such as bacteria, and internal organs; and prevents the loss of too much fluid.

The skin helps control body temperature and gets rid of some wastes. Certain cells in the skin communicate with the brain and allow temperature, touch, and pain sensations.

And, Sadly, Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Canada.

Did you know that:

Skin cancers represent a third to a half of all new cases of cancer each year

It is estimated that about 75,000 Canadians develop non-melanoma skin cancer each year, and that number continues to rise.

1 in 7 Canadians will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime

But with these skin cancer statistics comes this highly important message….

Did you know that  Skin Cancer can be prevented!

I founded the Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation in 2002,, because I believe that skin cancers could be virtually eliminated if people were aware of the dangers of overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays and educated about how they could safely enjoy the outdoors.

And that’s why, if you are in or near Edmonton,  I’m asking for your support to attend our Fundraiser Charity Event:

To reserve your ticket email or call us at 780-423-2723.

The Funds raised will support the Foundation’s skin cancer prevention school education and awareness programs.

Hi, I’m Doctor Barry Lycka. I’m a cosmetic dermatologist and I really want to help you look after your skin as best as you can. I am frequently asked, ‘ What is a good cosmetic product and what sorts of things should you do to help your body? ‘

So today I’d like to share 5 easy but effective skin care tips with you.

The first thing I would like to share with you, that most people do which is harsh on your skin,  is to take showers that are too hot and too warm.  That unfortunately dries out your skin.  You know how people who soak in a hot tub frequently gets skin that looks like a prune, well that’s not too healthy. So avoid taking baths and showers that are too hot.

A second piece of advice I frequently tell people is that they should use products that are not heavily scented. One of the products I find that has traditionally been a problem is Irish Spring soap because it has too much in the way of harsh chemicals in it and that causes a lot of rashes for people. So avoid heavily scented products.

A third thing I can share with you that is a wonderful thing that everybody should do is to use a moisturizer.  Specifically, one that’s  designed for their skin.  Some people need a heavier moisturizer, some people need a light moisturizer and you should take advice from a good cosmetic professional so that they can advise you on some better, more appropriate moisturizers for you.

My fourth piece of advice is that everybody should be aware of the damage caused by sunlight.  Sunlight can cause a lot of problems for people and it should be avoided during the hottest times of the day between 10 and 3 o’clock.  Sunlight is a major major problem for many people and we see a lot of the skin cancers we have as a result of too much sun exposure and damage.

I would also like to suggest that you avoid tanning booths.  Tanning booths give you un-natural sunlight and they concentrate the light a lot more than the regular sun. We find that people who get suntanned in a sun tanning parlor get far more problems.  They have a higher risk of skin cancer, they get a higher risk of burns and they get a higher risk of wrinkles and no one wants to go to a wrinkle parlor, do they?

And finally - sunscreen. What sort of sunscreen should you use?  Something with a high number, a 30 a 45, something that will really protect you and it should be repeated every two hours when you’re out in the sun.  So in addition to avoiding the sun, you should protect yourself when you’re in it. This will help you look after your skin and avoid problems from skin cancers.

I hope you find this advice useful in protecting your skin and keeping it, and you, healthy.

The new Coolsculpting Fat Reduction Treatment is featured in a TV interview with Edmonton Dermatologist Dr Barry Lycka. In this 2 minute TV  feature, Dr Lycka explains what is coolsculpting and how it helps to reduce body fat.

Edmonton Gobal TV anchorman Gord Steinke, and Su Ling Goh introduced the feature by talking about love handles, muffin tops, saddle bags as all being cute names for problems that many people don’t find funny — that of having excess fat.  The new and non-invasive procedure called Coolsculpting can help, which involves freezing the fat.

Coolsculpting is based on research that started in the 1970s when scientists noticed that kids who ate a lot of popsicles would  sometimes develop dimples in their cheeks.  It was believed that cooling the fat cells can kill them.  Now a few facilities across Alberta are offering this new treatment Coolsculpting, one of them being Edmonton Cosmetic Dermatologist, Dr Barry Lycka.

As explained by Dr Lycka, “What freezing does to those fat cells is it literally turns them into crystals.  The body’s immune system then recognizes them and eats them up.”

The concept is known as Cryolipolysis, and was discovered by Harvard researchers in the ’90s who showed that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than other cells. The Coolsculpting equipment is used to extract heat from the body, cooling the area to a top secret temperature where only the fat is affected. Powerful suction holds the tissue in place while cooling the fat layer.  It’s been shown the process can kill fat cells which the body then eliminates.  The procedure lasts up to two hours, costs anywhere from $750 to $1500 for one treatment,  and multiple sessions maybe needed. A couple of patients were featured receiving this new treatment which they wanted to help them to reduce body fat.

Dr.  Barry Lycka promises most patients will see dramatic results within four months, saying “The magic thing is the body only produces so many fat cells.  So once a person gets rid of them, they’re history!”

Hi! I’m Edmonton Dermatologist, Doctor Barry Lycka, and this post is another one of a new series where I give you information about cosmetic surgery procedures, highlight cosmetic surgery tips and keep you informed of the newest and best procedures in cosmetic surgery today, and whats happening in the beauty world.

The reason for todays post is I am going to talk to you about another new cosmetic surgery procedure that is literally revolutionizing cosmetic surgery today. The reason why is most people ask me all the time, how do you lose body fat without exercise, without dieting and without trauma.

Well, there are only a couple of techniques which can do this.

1. lipo dissolve which I have been doing since 2003

2. another one is a procedure called ultrashape, and you will be able to watch another eposide of to discover all about that

3. and the third is new to me and its called coolshaping. You will also hear it called coolsculpting

I had the pleasure recently of talking to Dr Charles Crutchfield of Minneapolis Minnesota. He is one of the worlds experts in this. Charles is a friend that I have known for a number of years and I have seen him at length adopt new procedure after new procedure  - but what makes Charles unique is that he stays away from the cosmetic procedures that don’t work and has a unique antenna for putting his finger on the pulse of those.

So this is the first new procedure that Charles has gotten involved with for a number of years and the reason why is that it is a procedure that is working really really well.

It is called coolsculpting - made by a company called Zeltiq.

What makes this technique unique is that it freezes fat and the fat literally dissipates away. It was invented because a number of years ago people with popsicles would frequently put a popsicle on their cheek and many people would then develop dimples.

Well after a number of years people caught onto this and found that this might be a means of helping the body get a better shape without trauma. If you’ve ever been in a frostbite situation you know that frostbite is a very nasty thing especially when it damages the top layers of the skin. Well Zeltiq have found a way to freeze the deeper layers of the skin without traumatising the top layers of the skin. This makes a huge difference for people.

It is usually used on the abdomen and the flanks - those are the main indications for it and what the machine does is literally suck up the fat and put a cold freezing into that area - it draws the heat from that area and Charles has had some phenomenal results with this.

Its working in 8 or 9 out of every 10 people and it usually takes 1 to 2 treatments.

I’m Doctor Barry Lycka.  I’m glad I had this opportunity to talk to you today.  Talk to you soon.
